Question: How/Where Do I Start?! Part 1 (Preparation)

Reader Question

“I’m not real sure where to start with all the couponing, but I would love to get in the habit of using them.  Any words of advice you might have will be much appreciated.”
-  L.F.

This is the most asked question I get and even though I tell people exactly how to start they still ask it again later.  I think you really just have to do something and then it will begin to make sense.  If you don’t do anything, it can be overwhelming and you are stuck on “how do I start?”

Here are the steps I would take to get started with coupons.  If any other readers have some advice feel free to share it in the comments!

First: Get the Sunday newspaper and cut out coupons even if you aren’t sure if you will use them.  Just cut them out and start your “coupon stash.”  Use a few envelopes until you buy a book.  Don’t buy one yet, because you might file your coupons differently after you get started (more on that in another series).

Second:  Read the Getting Started section to familiarize yourself with some terms and rules.

Third:  Decide which store would be the easiest to try coupons. I would pick United or Target first.  Go back to the Getting Started tab and re-read the section about that store to really understand their specific rules and read that store’s coupon policy here.   At this point, you have only decided on what store to try and that’s it.  I’m going to choose United to make it easy to explain and then we’ll move to Target and then finally CVS and Walgreens last.

Do these simple preparations and look for Part 2 on “How/Where Do I Start” in the next few days!
